The artist explains: 'This large painting, The Faun and the Mermaid, is about a relationship. The couple are together in a landscape, protected in the bend of a river, near a Balinese pagoda or 'bale', and surrounded by playful rabbits - perhaps telling on a lyrical moment in their lives. To the right, in a later bend in the river is a house constructed in a tree, a land in which they are perhaps not destined to arrive.

Jelila's expressionist paintings capture the feeling of the moments in her life, as well as telling some of their story with the symbolic shapes and objects included in the painting.
Loosely painted and free, symbolic and ith an advanced sense of colour and shape, Jelila's artistic influences include Picasso and Modigliani.
